President's Cup Match Play Final Results!

He might be the shortest golfer in the Patriot Hills Player's Club, but on Saturday June 17th, he stood the tallest.  Michael McKeever won his 5th and final match against Mike Prendergast 2&1 to become the First Annual President's Cup Match Play Champion!  It was a tall task with McKeever giving 12 strokes to the eventual runner-up.  They say you play your best golf when you are thinking about nothing when making your stroke, so after knocking his 3rd shot on Hole 14 to 20 feet, McKeever thought back to all the other 20 foot birdie putts he has made over the years.  This strategy helped as he calmy rolled in the bird to go 2up on Mikey P.  As McKeever made par on Hole 15 to go 3 up, Mikey Prendergast, known for splitting fairways and blocks of metal, won Hole 16 to go 2 down, and just ran out of juice on 17 and pushed the hole, giving our Champion a 2&1 victory.  "He rolled in about three, 30 foot par putts on me today", said McKeever after the match.

McKeever had a tough road to his eventual championship.  He took out Paul Altomonte Sr. 3&1 in round 1, Robert Swartz in 19 holes in round 2, disposed of Sean A. Murray in 19 holes in round 3, and won by default after 10 holes againt James Dinuzzo.  Winning back to back matches on the 1st extra hole proved that Mike was ready for all challengers.  Although, his match with Sean A. Murray could have had a different outcome with Sean telling me after the match, "I should have had a few less beers last night."  We can only speculate if there would have been a different outcome.

On his road to the finals, Prendergast tossed aside Trevor Duboff, Pat Sullivan, Matthew Herman, and Martin Dollard.  He also beat them at golf, winning those matches 2&1, 3&2, 3&1, and 2UP, respectively.  If his final Match againt Michael McKeever was a fist fight, he would have won 10&8, but it wasn't and he had to let his sticks do the fighting.  It was a valiant effort, but McKeever just proved to be a little too much for him to handle.

Thank you to all the participants of this years Inaugral President's Cup Match Play and we look forward to doing it all again next year!!
